Recap: Curators and Collaborators

The turnout for Meet Gen C was huge! Our panelists included Erica Cerulo, Of A Kind; Jessica Grose, Lenny Letter; Nick Quah, Panoply/Slate; and moderator, Jenna Weiss-Berman, Director of Audio, Buzzfeed.

Why newsletters? All of the panelists revealed that people care a lot about their inboxes and it was Twitter and Instagram that were still a bit fleeting in terms of engagement. Another shared view was of the correlation between newsletters and podcasts. Both mediums share a certain intimacy that is a welcome break from the 24-hour news cycle. Jessica Grose advised new writers or content producers to start their own newsletter as a great weekly or daily practice. "Psychologically, keep your expectations low, but give it all you've got," reiterated Nick Quah, who writes the weekly newsletter Hot Pod.

Bottomline: "It's really obvious in newsletters or podcasts when you're not passionate about the subject matter," said Jenna Weiss-Berman. Create new media on topics that are of interest to you and do it every single day.

A big thank you to our hosting partner, presented with the School of Media Studies at The New School, which allowed for great questions and one-on-one time with the speakers after the panel ended. If you missed the discussion, fear not.
